Watch Care & Maintenance: Keep Your Timepiece Perfect
Essential watch care guide. Learn how to clean, store, wind, and maintain your watch. Prevent common damage and extend your timepiece lifespan.
📑 In This Guide:
Daily Care and Cleaning
Clean your watch weekly with a soft microfiber cloth to remove oils, sweat, and dirt. For metal bracelets, use warm water with mild soap and a soft toothbrush - but ensure the crown is screwed down tightly first. Never use chemicals or ultrasonic cleaners on watches with unsealed crowns. Leather straps should be kept away from water and cleaned with a dry cloth only.
Proper Storage
Store watches in a watch box or roll with individual compartments to prevent scratching. Keep away from magnetic fields (speakers, phones, tablets) which can magnetize the movement and cause timekeeping issues. Maintain moderate temperature and humidity - extreme heat can dry out lubricants, extreme cold can affect accuracy. If not wearing for extended periods, a watch winder keeps automatic watches running.
Winding and Setting
For automatic watches, if stopped, manually wind 20-30 turns before wearing. Never change the date between 9 PM and 3 AM as the date-change mechanism is engaged. Set the time by moving the hands forward only (clockwise) to avoid stressing the gear train. Hand-wind manual watches at the same time each day with 30-40 turns until you feel resistance - never force beyond this point.
When to Service
Mechanical watches benefit from servicing every 4-5 years even without issues. Signs your watch needs service: losing/gaining more than 30 seconds per day, irregular timekeeping, grinding or unusual sounds when winding, condensation under the crystal, or the rotor spinning freely (reverser wheels worn). A basic service includes disassembly, cleaning, re-oiling, gasket replacement, and pressure testing.
